How
can you undo 150 years of brain-washing and indoctrination to a people, to
a society, to a nation? His style, his genre is Political pop, and World music. His name says it all, SOLOMON. Lead
Singer, Songwriter, Bassist, Band Leader. He
understands it! He
understands it! He
understands it! For
when the President of his country Trinidad and Tobago says that, the people cannot fail the nation.
When
the Police would want the people believe that they are fighting the
criminals in order to solve crime. When
the Prime Minister remains the Prime minister, after promising 10,000
houses per year hold on! Not 10,000! It’s more like 8,000 per year! To a
population with over 200,000 applications for houses, made to the
government, (do the math, 200,000/10,000 = 20 years) many will have to
wait 10-15years and more for that promise to be fulfilled. When the newly appointed Chief Justice of the country says, that the judiciary must work to restore public confidence, it must have been that he took notice of Solomon’s one week protest at the steps of The Hall of Justice. Some say it was a publicity stunt, some even thought that the protest was in support of the impeachment of the past Chief Justice, a matter which at the time was being pursued by the Prime Minister. But most people saw it the protest action for what it truly was; a lack of confidence in the Justice system of Trinidad and Tobago. When
the state promotes calypso, soca and chutney, a kind of music, designed
for bump and grind, to the tune of over $300m per year under the guise of “culture”
of the people, with an unconscionable mandate, that no other local musical
expression is promoted, sponsored or in any way whatsoever benefits from
any state support. “Considered a visionary by those who know him and his music, Solomon continues to step beyond boundaries that few other local musicians dare. Born Solomon Gabriel, this multi-faceted musician produces everything from calypso to pop to rock, reggae and an alternative to an assortment of world beat fusions. In fact, not since the passing of Bob Marley, has the Caribbean seen an artiste with such intense lyrical expressiveness”. (Trinidad Guardian - Entertainment Reporter - Wayne Bowman.) No one can prevent an artiste from doing his thing and no one should. But for music man Solomon, it seems that it’s exactly what the powers that be have set about to do in the country of Trinidad and Tobago. Firstly, with a number of 20 plus radio stations on the island, none of his songs got any measure of airplay after having some of the best produced music ever on the island, but he is determined. From doing live gigs and selling over thousands of copies of his first two albums from the backseat of his car and online at www.cdbaby.com/solomonsongs Solomon
went on to acquire his broadcast license from the government of Trinidad
and Tobago and began his own broadcasting service, making himself the most
independent artiste in the Caribbean at this time. But
this was not to come about so easily. For immediately upon commencement of
transmission it was discovered that his radio signal was blocked out of
one of the most important area in broadcasting, by a government controlled
radio station. That’s when all
hell broke loose! Solomon took the government controlled radio to the High Court, seeking compensation for the damages caused due to the blockage (harmful interference.) The court stayed the matter and ordered a Dispute Resolution. An arbitrator was brought in from Jamaica to hear the complaint of Solomon’s Radio. (JUDGMENT
WAS RECENTLY HANDED DOWN IN FAVOUR OF SOLOMON’S RADIO STATION NAMELY
SIDEWALK RADIO
92.1FM.) But that was not all! Some how the Telecommunication Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (T.A.T.T) offered Solomon a new radio frequency for his broadcast, (not bad). He was given 9 months to reposition his transmitters to the new frequency. Sometime during the 9 month period, he was ordered to cease broadcast from the first frequency that was given. He then informed the Authority that he was still within the migration period from the old frequency to the new, but it would seem that T.A.T.T had other plans in mind. On Monday 11th December 2006, officials of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and T.A.T.T broke into the transmission site of the radio station, ceased the transmitter and summoned Solomon to the magistrate court, on a charge of operating a radio station without a license granted by the government of Trinidad and Tobago. That offence according to the law carries a penalty of 5 years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000.00. Now, the music man Solomon is not only fighting for his radio and his right of self-expression as an artiste, but has also found himself fighting to keep his arse out of prison. All of this, courtesy the government of Trinidad and Tobago. Stay Tuned on developments on this very crucial issue. |
